2024 Daytona 500 Underdog Fantasy Pick’em
Kyle Larson Worse Than 8.5
When it comes to superspeedways, “worse than” is the way to go more often than “better than.” As you know, big wrecks are the name of the game at the Daytona 500. Avoid those big wrecks and be in the running at the end of the race.
Kyle Larson is one of the best race car drivers in the entire world, no matter what kind of car he is in or where he is at. Superspeedways seem to be the Kryptonite for this Superman.
In 41 career superspeedway starts, Kyle Larson only had one top-five finish. Larson always seems to have himself in the mix throughout the race but just cannot avoid chaos in the end. Fading Kyle Larson on superspeedways is the number one commandment on the NASCAR Gambling Podcast.
Kyle Busch Better Than 8.5
Kyle Busch has accomplished just about everything in the sport except for winning the Daytona 500. Busch was leading at the end of 500 miles last year, but overtime didn’t go his way, and he finished seventh. He went on to win at Talladega later in the year. Busch finished seventh in the fall race at Daytona. 12 times Busch has finished better than 8.5 at Daytona.
February 18th is also a significant date for Richard Childress Racing. February 18th, 2001, was the date Dale Earnhardt was fatally lost in the Daytona 500. The Daytona 500 has been run on February 18th twice since that day. Kevin Harvick won for RCR in 2007, and Austin Dillion also won on that date in 2018. This year’s Daytona 500 is scheduled for February 18th.
William Byron Worse Than 7.5
Back to hitting the “Worse Than” side of things and playing the numbers game. In his last nine races at Daytona, only twice has Byron finished better than 7.5. Byron has won at Daytona before and is very capable of doing so. However, the nature of superspeedway races says to take the “worse than”
Ryan Blaney Worse Than 6.5
Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney is one of the best drivers on superspeedways. So, why are we taking his lower than you ask? Because of what happened in Thursday night’s Duel at Daytona race. Blaney only needs to finish seventh or worse for this to hit for you.

On a “normal” race weekend, not all 40 cars have a chance to finish in the top six. At a superspeedway like Daytona, everyone can finish inside of that top six, making it a numbers game. Like Ryan said after the crash Thursday night, “I’m tired of getting wrecked by someone else’s mistake.” So pick the driver you want to back for your higher than, and go lower than on everyone else.
