Underdog Fantasy College Basketball Picks For December 4th

Underdog Pick Em Record (Est 12/1/2023)

All Pick Em Selections: 4-5

Perfect 3-0 Pick Em Entries: 0-3

Zach Edey (Purdue) Higher Than 24.5 Points

Purdue is a large favorite in this game against Iowa, and the total is set at 164.5. I’m inclined to take a deep look at the Boilermakers’ #1 source for points, and that’s the 2023 National Player of the Year, Zach Edey. According to EvanMiya.com, the Hawkeyes have the lowest team DBPR (defensive efficiency) in the entire Big Ten so far this season. Iowa’s starting center, Ben Krikke, is listed at 6’10 and is the tallest man on the roster. Krikke is also the worst defensive starter per EvanMiya’s DBPR metric, and he’ll be tasked with slowing down Edey.

Hint: I don’t think Krikke will slow down Zach Edey. It’s a pure Canadian vs Canadian big man mismatch. Purdue has played against five high majors so far this season. Edey has gone higher than 24.5 points in four of those five games. In those five games against high majors Edey has averaged 27.8 points per game.

Payton Sandfort (Iowa) Higher Than 10.5 Points

Purdue is one of college basketball’s great teams. However, their one hole in the lineup is that they don’t have a good enough power forward, offensively or defensively. The rotating 4s in the Boilermakers’ roster are the weak link of the nation’s 9th-best defense, according to KenPom. Peyton Sandfort has been playing the 4 this season for Iowa, and I believe that he is their most dynamic offensive player.

Sandfort has scored higher than 10.5 points in five of Iowa’s first seven games. The 6’7 Junior has eclipsed the number all three times the Hawkeyes have played a high major opponent.

Ben Krikke (Iowa) Lower Than 16.5 Points

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, Underdog was only offering the Purdue vs. Iowa game. So, in that case, all three selections have to come from the matchup being played in West Lafayette. Purdue’s center Zach Edey is notorious for forcing opponents to foul him because of his 7’4 size and 300 lb strength. In the Boilermakers’ last game, Edey drew 14 fouls against the rotating centers from Northwestern. The quartet of players only combined for 12 points. Iowa’s center Ben Krikke is in an uphill battle tonight.
