Week 8 Wednesday Night College Football Picks
Sam Houston State (-6) vs. Florida International (O/U 42)
It is rare to see a 0-6 team favored over a 3-4 team, but that is what we have on our hands in this weekday C-USA Clash. Sam Houston has played the most top-heavy schedule in the conference, and that has shown in their record. They have already played two Big 12 teams, and Air Force sits atop the Mountain West. They have played a respectable game in all their games, but one.
Florida International is the lone 0-4 team in the conference, but they have some impressive wins on their resume. I wrote them up as a team to look out for in the conference this season, and I already believe they proved some people wrong.
Best CFB Team at every Win Count:
0 Wins: Sam Houston State
1 Win: Arizona State
2 Wins: Arkansas
3 Wins: Auburn
4 Wins: UCLA
5 Wins: Texas
6 Wins: Ohio State
7 Wins: Georgia pic.twitter.com/Bk1DZiDjhg— College Football Report (@CFBRep) October 16, 2023
This is Sam Houston State’s best chance to win this season, and they will be ready. A home game with a national audience has the makings for Sam Houston to get their first FBS win in school history. Sam Houston is 0-6, but they have one of the best defenses in the conference and will pace FIU to death during this matchup. The Bearkats will get it done tonight.
The Pick: Sam Houston State -6
New Mexico State (-3) at UTEP (O/U 47.5)
Two bottom-of-the-barrel C-USA teams matchups in El Paso. In my opinion, neither of these two teams should ever be favored. That is surely an issue when they face off. New Mexico State had high hopes heading into the season but quickly looked awful as they fell to UMass in Week 0. Jerry Kill has a good thing going with this program, and it looks like they have figured it out of late.
UTEP is a team I have faded in a few spots this season, and I will continue to. They are one of the most undersized and least athletic teams I have seen all year. UTEP is 2-4, with their wins coming to a bad FIU team and Incarnate Word, who is an FCS team.
Last year, New Mexico State figured it out late in the season. It looks like we are seeing more of the same. Quarterback Diego Pavia is nearing 2,000 yards passing this year and comes in with a 16 to 5 touchdown to interception ratio. UTEP will struggle to stop the NMST offense down the stretch.
The Pick: New Mexico State -3
