MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 28

Atlanta Braves vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Although the Braves have been one of the very best offenses this year, they have been cold lately. They’ve scored just eight total runs over their last four games (2.00 per game), and seven of those runs came in one game. Things won’t get any easier with rookie Payton Tolle on the bump. Tolle carries a 2.45 ERA into action on Thursday. He’s also fanned 39 batters in just 36.2 innings on the year. While the Braves will likely get back to their solid offense soon, it likely won’t be early against Tolle.

The Red Sox have had a rough go of it at the plate this season. They currently rank 29th in the league in first inning scoring – averaging just 0.30 first inning runs per game. They aren’t any better over the whole game either – ranking 29th in that category as well with 3.77 runs per game. If that isn’t already enough reason to like the NRFI here, add in that it’s a homecoming game for Chris Sale. The former Red Sox has a 1.89 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 62.0 innings. He’ll be heavily motivated (not that he’ll need to be) to shut the Red Sox down here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 28: No (TBD)

Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

Nathan Eovaldi toes the rubber on Thursday to get our NRFI started right. He has been solid this season, but perhaps nothing to write home about. His 3.65 ERA is good, and he’s racked up 61 strikeouts in 61.2 innings on the year. However, he also seems to have the Astros number. The two faced off just two weeks ago and Eovaldi had his best start of the year. He went 7.0 scoreless in that game, allowing just seven baserunners and striking out eight. I like his chances here to get an eighth consecutive scoreless one here.

In the bottom of the first, we have a pitcher who has been much hotter this year. Spencer Arrighetti is seven starts into the season and has already picked up six wins. A large part of that is due to his 1.32 ERA. He’s now been over twelve straight innings without allowing a run. Facing Texas is going to help him keep that going – they are one of just seven teams that are averaging under 4.00 runs per game this season.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 28: No (TBD)
