MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 25

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburg Pirates

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off the NRFI, we have the Cubs at the plate. While they were once one of the hottest offenses in the league, they’ve dropped eight straight games. A lot of that has been due to their hitting going cold. Over the past week, they’ve scored just 12 runs, which comes out to 2.00 runs per game. Those issues should be compounded by Carmen Mlodzinski being on the bump. Although he’s not the Pirates pitcher most teams fear, he’s been hot lately. He’s allowed two or less runs in each of his last three starts and sports a 2.25 ERA in that span.

Pittsburgh is another offense that has come back to Earth recently. Currently, they’re ranked in the top five of run scoring, but have put up just 2.67 runs per game over their last three games. Their task at hand is not an easy one on Monday. Ben Brown gets the ball for the Cubs. He carries 2.08 ERA into the game and has looked solid since moving into the rotation. In the three starts he’s made so far, he’s kept two of his opponents scoreless. If the Pirates are going to get going again, this is not the guy to try to do it against.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 25: No (-115)

Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Minnesota is first to the playe here. They’re another team with solid year stats, but they have struggled in the first inning. They rank just 17th in first inning runs. That’s good news for Anthony Kay as the lefty gets another start. His ERA might not be much to look at to start with, but he’s been lights out over his last four outings. He’s held all four of those opponents to two runs or less and posted a 2.11 ERA in that span. Add in 19 strikeouts in 21.1 innings and he is a tall task for anyone in the first inning.

For the third time this year, the Twins call upon Zebby Matthews for a start. The young righty looked the part in the first two starts, allowing just two earned runs over 13.0 innings (a 1.38 ERA). He’s also got solid strikeout stuff – fanning 11 in that stretch. The White Sox are a middle of the pack team in terms of their offense. However, they do struggle with strikeouts. They rank 29th in the league in strikeouts, which is only ahead of the Angels. That should help Matthews breeze through the first inning and cash this for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 25: No (-115)
