MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 24
Cleveland Guardians vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Cleveland gets first ups in this one and their offense is the type you want in an NRFI situation. They’re below average in both run scoring and hitting home runs, but more importantly, they’ve been ice cold. Despite a 4-1 run, they’ve scored just 11 runs in those five games (a 2.20 runs per game average). That should help out Philadelphia starter Andrew Painters, who has found the opposite trejectory. After starting slow this year, he’s found his way with back-to-back strong outings. In those games he’s thorwn a combined 11.0 innings with just three runs and seven hits. That’s a 2.45 ERA in that span with a 0.82 WHIP. That should be good enough to keep the Guardians on that run they’re on.
In the bottom of the inning, we have one of the more dominant pitchers in the American League this year. Parker Messick enters the game in the top 15 of MLB in wins, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts. He’s struck out at least six batters in each of his last five starts. Now he’ll face the Phillies, who are also having a bad week. They’ve won just one of their last four games and it’s largely been due to their offense. In that stretch, they’ve scored just eight runs, which comes out to a 2.00 runs per game average. Messick should mow them down, particularly early on in the game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 24: No (-135)
Seattle Mariners vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
We played this series twice already, there’s no reason to quit it now. The Mariners can’t seem to score runs lately. They, too, have scored just eight runs over their last four games. That dropped them to 24th in terms of run scoring on the year with just 4.00 per game. Now they’ll face Seth Lugo, who hasn’t had the same All-Star level year as he’s had in the past, but is pitching respectably. He’s coming off a solid outing against the Red Sox and will face a similar level of offense here.
In the bottom of the first we get out final set of cold bats. The Royals broke out for five runs on Saturday, which is the same number that they scored in the four previous games combined. That comes out to 2.00 per game in that run. They’re now down to 28th in terms of runs per game and are just one of six teams that have not cracked 4.00 per game. They’ll face Bryan Woo, who is on fire right now. In his last three starts (18.0 innings), he’s only allowed two runs and struck out 26. This should be a walk in the park for him in the first inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 24: No (-115)
