MLB Picks for August 17th

Boston Red Sox @ Washington Nationals

Start Time – 4:05 pm EST
Nationals Park
Broadcast – MLB TV

I know the Red Sox haven’t exactly been firing on all cylinders this season, but I like them in this spot. They’re hot as of late, winning four of their last five going into Wednesday night’s game. Also, they have a surprising amount of players on their team with a bunch of history with Nationals’ starter Partick Corbin.

Speaking of Corbin, he had a solid last start – going five innings with just one earned run. However, he walked seven in that outing and had allowed 3+ earned in each of the four starts prior. He’s going to let up a boatload here, and I’ll snag the Red Sox runline at Sox -1.5 (-120).

New York Mets @ St. Louis Cardinals

Start Time – 7:15 pm EST
Busch Stadium
Broadcast – FOX

I can’t believe that in 2023, I’m about to write this, but this is a great spot for the Mets moneyline on the road. I know it sounds crazy, but Wainwright has been so bad for the Cardinals. He’s allowed 7+ runs in three of his last five starts, and those games were to the Royals, Rockies, and Marlins (not exactly potent offenses).

The recent run of the Mets isn’t inspiring, but Quintana has been good. He’s given up three or fewer earned over 6+ innings in five straight outings. That should be good enough for the Mets to cash at -120.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Diego Padres

Start Time – 9:40 pm EST
Petco Park
Broadcast – MLB TV

Another game and another road favorite for me. I like the Diamondbacks here at -120 as one of my MLB picks for August 17th. The Padres have lost seven of their last ten, and the blame largely rests on the shoulders of their inept offense. They’ve scored one or less runs in four of their last six games.

Facing the odds on favorite to win the National League Cy Young Award in Zac Gallen shouldn’t help matters – nor should giving Rich Hill the start. He’s allowed 11 earned in his last two starts and only managed to log 6.1 innings in that time.

Prop(s) of the Day – Justin Turner to Hit HR(+380)/Adam Duvall to Hit HR(+225)

As I mentioned prior with my Red Sox breakdown, the boys from Fenway have a ton of history against Nationals starter Patrick Corbin. Justin Turner and Adam Duvall lead that charge in terms of success. The two each have at least 35 at bats against Corbin. Turner is hitting .381 with a .619 slugging.

He has four doubles and two homers. Similarly, Duvall has a .343 batting average with .629 slugging. He also has four doubles and two homers. I like both of them to add a third homer to that pile on Thursday.
