Sean went first, and his starting question for any Army game is whether the other side can stop the run. By his numbers Tulsa can’t: 121st in the nation, giving up 191.6 rush yards a game. He gave Tulsa credit for a plus-11 turnover margin, third in the country, but said they convert only 31.3% of third downs. A team that can’t stay on the field hands Army the clock, so he took Army as a small dog, adding that this Army team didn’t strike him as sloppy enough to give the ball away.
Colby took the Golden Hurricane at home and said Sean’s run-defense numbers are diluted. This is the third option team Tulsa has seen in three weeks. They lost at Navy two weeks ago after leading for a lot of that game, then beat Rice last week. He added that Tulsa’s head coach used to coach the triple option himself, and that Tulsa beat Army at Army last year. His point was that nobody can mimic the rhythm of that offense in practice, so a month of live reps against it is worth something.
Ryan turned that around. Three weeks of getting cut blocked leaves a defense banged up, he said, something he watched happen to Virginia Tech after its own option games. Colby didn’t buy it. Ryan stayed on Army anyway, with a salute to the military and a jab at the Golden Hurricane name, and noted Army now sits in the small-dog Friday night parlay he and Sean are building.
