Duke vs Virginia Odds
Virginia was a 1.5-point favorite over Duke with a total of 47.5 when the guys taped on October 20. That is the number from the show’s Week 8 picks sheet, and all three picks were made against it.
Our Picks
- Ryan Kramer (@KramerCentric): Duke +1.5
- Sean Green (@SeanTGreen): Virginia -1.5
- Colby Dant (@thecolbyd): Virginia -1.5
Sean opened leaning Virginia, mostly because he couldn’t bring himself to trust Duke on the road. He pointed out that Duke has lost six straight in Charlottesville, that North Carolina got out early, let Duke back in and then finished them off, and that Duke also blew a lead against Georgia Tech.
Ryan wasn’t moved. He doesn’t think North Carolina is particularly good, even while admitting Duke looked pretty bad in that game, and he said there was “a 0% chance that I’m taking UVA.” When Sean asked whether that was just because he hates Virginia, Ryan’s answer was that you can always talk him into a weeknight dog. When in doubt, take the dog.
Colby was firmly on the Wahoos. This is a rematch of last year’s ACC championship game, which he attended: Duke beat Virginia in overtime in Charlotte, and in Colby’s telling that loss is what kept Virginia out of the College Football Playoff. He likes how old the Virginia roster is, with a lot of those players still around, and he thinks Duke’s résumé is full of phony wins, with Illinois not very good and Stanford terrible. His one concern was a Virginia run defense he has 88th in the country against Duke’s rushing attack. He still landed on revenge and a more desperate home team, and Sean followed him there, taking Virginia laying the short number.
Before any of that, Colby made the case for Scott Stadium, saying SMU modeled its own stadium on it and that this matchup goes back to 1890. Ryan’s reply was that it’s a crazy stadium to be inspired by, since it rarely has a crowd.
