Both guys laid a big number with the popular side here, which is not how this show usually goes. Tampa is the public team in this spot, better than 70 percent of the tickets, and that is normally the cue to go hunting for the dog instead. Cleveland never gave them a reason. The segment opened on travel. Cleveland did not stay in Florida between two road trips to the state, which got the obvious question on air about whether the Browns ever make the right call. The football point underneath it is older than this season: Cleveland’s defense falls apart on the road even in the years it is good, and it falls apart because the offense gives it no help. Long sustained drives, nobody resting, gassed by the end.
From there they named the trap themselves. Everybody is on Tampa, so somebody has to be building the Cleveland case. Their case for the Bucs was fumbles. Tampa put it on the ground four times against Cincinnati and lost every one, including a fumble into the end zone and a scoop and score, and the yards-per-play numbers still had them in that game. Take the giveaways out and Tampa played fine. Add a focused, non-fumbling Baker who wants revenge on Cleveland and the 8.5 reads as gettable.
Cleveland’s counter got real airtime. Both Browns rookie receivers got separation and might get open against the Tampa Bay secondary, and the advanced defensive numbers like Cleveland more than a 24-point loss should allow. One of the guys pushed back on the numbers on the spot: they got their doors blown off, so that does not pass the eye test. And a receiver getting open only pays if the quarterback finds him, which is the exact bet neither host would make. The show also noted Tampa is 0-10 against the spread, and that 11 games is the longest any team has gone without covering, so the streak is live either way.
The tail end is a Watson referendum. Can Cleveland send him out at home at 0-2, does the rookie start by the Carolina game, and there is a line from a Browns fan on social media about that home opener that we will leave on the podcast. They finished with the close-your-eyes math: a team has to miss the number by 21 to qualify, and Cleveland lost by 24 while getting well over a touchdown, so it missed by roughly 16. Nice try.
