Our Picks
- Ryan Kramer (@KramerCentric): Texans -4.5
- Sean Green (@SeanTGreen): Texans -4.5
Sean set the tone by saying the Texans have at least acted like an NFL team. Ryan said last week was his last week with the Chargers and he is done with them. Sean expects Houston fans to outnumber Chargers fans in the building.
To Sean, the scariest sign for Los Angeles came last week. Justin Herbert had a clean pocket and all the time he needed, and he still threw the ball into triple coverage. Sean called it a completely dead team. He thinks C.J. Stroud and the Texans offense can move the ball well enough coming off a bye, and he does not trust the Chargers to get to 14 points. He admitted the Houston defense is a puzzle given its talent. He also wondered whether the bump after DeMeco Ryans took over the defensive play calling had more to do with the opponent. Even so, he predicted a 26-3 Texans win.
Ryan brought the numbers. By his count, Herbert ranks 35th of 35 qualifying quarterbacks in EPA per play, and he quizzed Sean on where the Chargers offense ranks in EPA per play and points per drive. Sean guessed 32nd. Ryan pointed out that the offensive staff is the one thing that really changed, and he can’t see how nobody has been fired yet. Sean then asked for the simple version. Ryan said the Chargers have not scored more than 23 points in a game this season, and Sean noted that the 23 came at Seattle and that they went back-to-back games, with a bye in between, without a touchdown. Ryan called this almost as easy as it gets in the NFL.
