Sean asked how anyone could make a case for this Ravens team, then made one. It starts with the Ravens being a close your eyes special. They are a home dog on Thursday night, and he called Baltimore a tough place to go and play. Jacksonville is a 10-point road favorite after a huge win, which Sean sees as a letdown spot. He said the total told him this would be an ugly, grind-it-out game and pictured something like 24-17.
He did not pretend the quarterback situation is good. Sean said Fagnano is not 100% and will be out there with a bum leg. He also said Fagnano did not look effective when he came in against the Bills as the emergency third quarterback, though that is a tough spot to look good in. His fallback was a league truth: no team is as bad as you think, and no team is as good as you think. That, he said, is why the spread is in double digits.
Ryan offered the other side of the coin. The Jaguars have disposed of bad teams pretty well this season, and handling the weak teams is a sign of a great team. Could the Ravens defense play well enough? Sean thought so, pointing to the bump teams often get in the first backup quarterback game, when the defense realizes it has to carry things. Ryan added that Fagnano looks very banged up, so Baltimore will need a big game from everyone else. Sean called it Fagnano’s Super Bowl, maybe the only NFL start of his life.
Ryan admitted there is not a lot to say because the handicap is tricky. Sean liked that part. A team that is hard to make a case for is how you know a close your eyes special is a good one.
