Ryan’s read comes straight from the Saints’ win over the Giants. There was a stretch, he said, where the Giants simply stopped pressuring the Saints quarterback, and that is when New Orleans looked competent. When the pressure did come, the quarterback looked bad, even in a game where the Saints put up a lot of points. The Saints leaned on a very heavy tight end package to protect him in that one, and Ryan doesn’t think that holds up against this Steelers front.

Sean built his case on the ground. He called the Saints run defense dead last by some measures and said they don’t generate much pressure, so he expects Pittsburgh to control the ball with its running game and open up chances for the tight ends. On the other side, he sees the Saints struggling to run, which lets the Steelers pass rush go after a line that has had real problems at tackle.

His worry is margin. The Steelers have a habit of winning by exactly a field goal, which makes 3.5 a lot to lay. Ryan had flagged that Pittsburgh is in a back-to-back road spot while the Saints head into their bye. Ryan actually liked laying the 3.5. The tiebreaker for Sean was history: he cited favorites at 39-23-1 against the spread in overseas games, and when he is on the fence in these international games he goes with the favorite.
