The talk started with Tampa Bay’s quarterback, an undrafted rookie coming off his first start. Sean’s review was fair: he completed most of his passes, used his legs and threw a couple of horrible interceptions, and Ryan noted they still nearly won the game. Low expectations, met. Ryan’s bigger point was that the kid now gets the defense that helps every quarterback have a career year.
Sean had the numbers to back that up. He said the Cowboys are dead last in yards per play allowed at 6.4, and that came against the Giants, Commanders, Ravens and Texans, with the Texans lighting them up most recently. He also said Dallas leads the league in rushing yards allowed to quarterbacks, which matters against a rookie who likes to run. His rule here is a simple one: he never feels comfortable laying a big number with a bad defense. Ryan added that Dallas is again missing a piece in the middle of that defense. Sean conceded the Bucs defense hasn’t been good either and the secondary could be a problem, but thinks a little more pass rush keeps this a game.
Then came the spot. Ryan pointed to the lookahead, with Dallas facing the Micah Parsons Bowl on Sunday Night Football in Week 6. Sean called it a classic letdown after the Cowboys’ quarterback drove them to a huge win over their in-state rival, and by his count primetime dogs of seven or more against teams off 30-plus point games are 17-5 against the spread since 2020. Ryan’s last word was that even down two touchdowns, the backdoor will be wide open. He’d also take a little money-line action on Tampa Bay.
