After a rare week off, the UFC is back in action this weekend, heading across the world to the Galaxy Arena in Macau, China. Bantamweights take center stage this Saturday, with a former two-time UFC champion in the main event. For my MMA Underdog Pick of the Week: PFL Brussels, I’ve got a main card live dog. The UFC has an unfortunate habit of getting in on Japanese fighters too late. Numerous legendary Japanese fighters have joined the UFC with too many miles on their tires and ended up flaming out of the world’s biggest MMA promotion.
That may be the case with former RIZIN champion Kai Asakura. While only 32 years old, the miles have piled up on the bantamweight, and he’s been submitted in both his UFC fights – the first a title fight against Alexandre Pantoja, the last to Tim Elliott.
I’ll take a flyer on the younger, bigger, less banged-up fighter facing Asakura this week, Cameron Smotherman. ‘The Baby-Faced Killa’ has a solid all-around game and high-level experience.
