Texas Longhorns vs Arizona State Sun Devils

Putting my trust in Ewers and Sark again here. This is a huge step up in class for the Sun Devils, and if Texas can start fast, I don’t think Arizona State will be able to throw itself back into this game. Texas is in a familiar place after having played in the SEC championship here, so their familiarity with the stadium and environment is a big plus.

Consistency on a down-to-down basis starts and ends with Sark’s playcalling and Ewers being effective when he has to make a play. This secondary can be had, and I expect Ewers to play one of his best games of the year. His best WR (Isaiah Bond) is hopefully back, which adds even more potency to that pass attack.

I don’t think Arizona State quits or goes away, but I believe this Texas defense will dominate and force a few short fields, which in the end will result in a 17-20 point victory.

TEXAS LONGHORNS -13.5

Ohio State Buckeyes vs Oregon Ducks

This matchup has all the makings of a classic, with two high-powered offenses facing off against each other. However, Ohio State’s stingy defense may be the difference-maker in this game. The Buckeyes’ ability to shut down Oregon’s passing attack could be the key to their victory. I think Ohio State avenges their loss from earlier in the season, lay the points with the Buckeyes.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Georgia Bulldogs

This Allstate Sugar Bowl Notre Dame vs Georgia matchup has all the makings of an instant classic. These two teams are similar in their approach and both will look to impose their will on the line of scrimmage. However, there is one glaring difference between these teams at the most important position in football. On one hand, you have a veteran Senior QB who is in his third year of being a collegiate starter. On the other hand, you have a unproven Sophomore QB who barely has thrown the ball 50 times in two seasons, with most of those coming in garbage time. My handicap starts and ends with fading a QB making his first collegiate start in the Quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.

Despite the loss of DT Rylie Mills, this Notre Dame defense is a complete unit. Their impressive secondary will be especially key in this matchup. I expect Notre Dame to load the box to stop the run and dare the Bulldogs and the young Gunner Stockton to throw on them. Led by Senior safety Xavier Watts, this Irish secondary is a ball-hawking group with 18 interceptions and five pick-sixes. I see the young quarterback being baited into some ill-advised throws that will change the game. Give me the Irish to move on to the CFP Semifinals and in a game that is projected to be close, I’ll gladly take Notre Dame +2 (-110).

NOTRE DAME +2.0

Best Bet for the CFP Quarterfinals

As mentioned, the Rose Bowl is hosting a rare college football rematch tomorrow, as the #8 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes try to avenge their one-point loss to the #1 Oregon Ducks in Week 6. The winner punches their ticket to the Cotton Bowl and the College Football Playoff Semifinals on January 10th and a date with the winner of tomorrow’s Arizona State vs Texas game.

Considering the Buckeyes kept the score within a point on enemy turf in Eugene, Oregon in October, I like their chances tomorrow at a neutral site. Diving into the advanced stats (point differential, strength of schedule, etc), Ohio State should be favored tomorrow by a couple of points, so the Buckeyes on the spread is my best bet. JEFF FOX

OHIO STATE -2.5
