College Football Week 7 Reaction Show Recap
Pick Dundee (@TheColbyD) and Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) are joined by the guest as The College Football Experience on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its season with the College Football Week 7 Reaction Show, from Auburn stunning Georgia to Tennessee running Alabama off the field.
Did a 21-point dog really go between the hedges and beat Kirby Smart? Is Indiana still the better team after losing to Ohio State? How safe is Sark’s job after Florida’s backup quarterback beat Texas? Can James Madison run the table? Does Northwestern have a real playoff path? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
The College Football Week 7 Reaction Show Starts With A 24-Team Playoff
A beautiful Saturday kicked off this episode. The host called the last 10 days the best stretch the sport has had in a few years. Then the guys got into the reported move to a 24-team playoff. Ryan McIntyre is pro 24 and calls it the perfect number. His math is simple. One or two games might mean less, but he expects 20 to 25 more meaningful games each week. The third man in the booth also pointed out that bowl season is an opt-out fest anyway. So the case for protecting the bowls falls flat.
The host went further than that. Scrapping conference title games would end what he calls corporate, soulless neutral-site games. In their place, more playoff games would be played on campus, possibly across two rounds. He called it the best news the sport has had in a long time. Ryan McIntyre then brought up Boise State, a program still living off its 2007 Fiesta Bowl upset. So one shot on the big stage can carry a Group of Five program for years. Next, he pointed to JMU and North Dakota State as programs that will keep growing. And he called the idea that those schools can never beat a Power Four team a bunch of nonsense.
A Rough Weekday Card With A Few Cashes
The weekday slate started ugly. The guys thought Minucci might play for Delaware. He didn’t, and Middle Tennessee won. Then Colorado State gave up 66 points to Texas State on Thursday. That hurt twice, because the guys are holding a Colorado State win total over 3.5 and still need two wins. So the host took a few DMs calling his Thursday plays garbage, and he agreed. Friday brought Memphis, which outgained Tulane by about 200 yards and still lost. Turnovers buried it, and Ryan McIntyre ate that loss right alongside the host.
But the weekday card had winners too. Jacksonville State beat FIU, and Ryan McIntyre won that one on the show. Missouri State cashed as a 3.5-point dog with an outright win over Kennesaw State. Then App State, the host’s number one power-ranked lock, rallied after Coastal Carolina went up two scores. Coastal has now been bullied after halftime by Liberty, Delaware and App State. Also, the third man in the booth hit his Deuce Bailey ladder. Bailey threw for almost 300 yards and ran for 38. Washington then beat Purdue for a moneyline cash in what the host called Ryan Walters’ revenge game.
Ohio State Survives And West Virginia Keeps Rolling
Ohio State’s win at Indiana headlined the morning window. The guys should have cashed, but Indiana missed a 20-yard field goal. The host thought Indiana was the better team, mostly because its defensive line caused havoc all day. He actually believes in Indiana as a title contender more after this loss than after any win. Ohio State has a bigger problem. Julian Sayin got hurt and could reportedly miss about a month. Next up are USC, Oregon, Northwestern and Nebraska. So the host thinks the Buckeyes would lose at USC right now. Meanwhile, the third man in the booth laid the points with Ohio State and admits he got lucky.
West Virginia beat Cincinnati, and the host’s triple lock got home. The defense is still a mess, though. The Mountaineers gave up 622 yards, the most they have allowed all year. Ryan McIntyre doesn’t care, because he has Michael Hawkins and a run game that goes right at you. He also kept betting West Virginia live every time it fell behind by seven. Next comes TCU, where he has the Mountaineers as 9.5-point dogs at 3-1 on the moneyline. So he is riding the moneyline in Fort Worth. The third man in the booth also says the rollover is back. And the host calls TCU a must-win, since the guys hold West Virginia over 5.5 wins.
JMU, Army And The Texas Meltdown
James Madison buried Georgia State, and the host is still mad he passed. The line sat around 7.5 during the pregame show, and he stayed away. Meanwhile, the third man in the booth took it at 7.5. Now the guys want to know how JMU is unranked. The host also thinks JMU would beat Penn State right now. Then came the sweat of the day. Ball State beat Bowling Green 32-31 in overtime after going for two. The host had the Cardinals on the moneyline. The bar couldn’t find the game on TV, so he watched it on a laptop and high-fived strangers. It was one of his biggest cashes of the day.
Army hammered Florida Atlantic 56-24 while throwing for two yards. The Black Knights ran for close to 500 and converted 11 of 16 on third and fourth down. So Army is very much alive in the American, and the guys already hold a future on it. The host thinks that price is worth a bet for anyone not in yet. He has Army as a top-three team in the league. Also, SMU covered laying 9.5 against Virginia after a 13-10 game at halftime. And the host’s Clemson over 56.5 died in a 37-0 win over Charleston Southern.
Texas losing to Florida was the funniest result of the day, and the host watched it beside five Texas fans. It also cost him, because he had Florida as a lock on the show and backed off. Florida’s quarterback was making what the host believes was his first career start on the road. It didn’t matter. Texas went 3 for 13 on third and fourth down and ran for 99 yards. Then the guys turned to Steve Sarkisian’s job. The host thinks Sark is fired if he loses to Ole Miss this week. Ryan McIntyre says Sark is gone if Texas misses the playoff again. He has the Longhorns finishing 8-4.
Kansas, Rutgers And A Retried Extra Point
Kansas led Kansas State by double digits and lost anyway, so the streak hits 18 straight. Isaiah Marshall threw a pick into triple coverage when a field goal would have put Kansas ahead. The host had Kansas on the moneyline and the points at 5.5, and all of it was cooked. The third man in the booth also forecast that collapse almost perfectly. Then Boston College beat Pitt after Pitt jumped out 12-0 early. That loss made Ryan McIntyre a winner, because he put $100 on a bathroom parlay of West Virginia and BC. He won $900 on it.
Rutgers trailed Maryland 23-13 at halftime and then outscored the Terps 24-7 after the break. That call came through, and the host ranked it among the funniest outcomes of the day. Ryan McIntyre wants Mike Locksley fired, pointing out that he has lost three straight to Rutgers. Locksley is now 16-46 in Big Ten games. Maryland fired its defensive coordinator instead, and nobody on the show bought it. Northwestern also covered against Michigan State behind Aidan Chiles. The first-half moneyline hit, but the full-game moneyline lost. So the host is quietly rooting for a Northwestern playoff run, while Ryan McIntyre has them at 8-4.
Charlotte won outright as a 20.5-point dog against Temple. Temple’s coach called it the most embarrassing game he has ever been involved with. That result also helps the guys’ Charlotte win total over, while the Temple over looks burnt. Then came the worst beat of the day for anyone holding UMass at 6.5. Buffalo scored in overtime and missed the extra point. But a defender jumped offside, and Buffalo made the retry. The host thought he held 6.5, then learned he actually had 7.5 and cashed. And Ryan McIntyre now has Buffalo going bowling at 4-3.
Tennessee, Auburn And The Late Window
Tennessee dominated Alabama, and the host lost big on the Tide. He had around 250 tied up in one of his top plays. The Vols defense pushed Alabama around all day, and Ryan McIntyre sees a clear playoff path. He thinks Tennessee might get to 10-2. The host also thinks this week’s trip to South Carolina is the game Vols fans should fear most. Meanwhile, Alabama has two losses and very little wiggle room. Ole Miss then held Missouri to three points, which burned the host’s Missouri bet. Ryan McIntyre thinks the Rebels are good enough to win it all.
Auburn won at Georgia as a 21-point dog, and the host spent a while picking apart its roster. Byron Brown ran for 115 yards. Like a big chunk of the starters, the quarterback came over from South Florida. That matters because of the TV talk that Group of Five teams don’t belong in the playoff. So when a lineup built mostly from South Florida transfers wins between the hedges, that argument falls apart. Ryan McIntyre also noted that Auburn, now 4-2, is in the playoff if it wins out. And the third man in the booth called it a life-changing win for the new head coach.
The late window kept delivering. UCLA beat Wisconsin to hit the host’s number one lock, and he thinks 12-0 is on the table. Oregon State drilled Washington State, though Wazzu dressed up the final late. Ryan McIntyre had the Beavers at 17.5. They average 527 yards a game and lead the country at 375 passing yards per game. Houston beat Oklahoma State 35-32, but a backdoor finish from the Pokes cost the guys. Then BYU beat Notre Dame, and the third man in the booth cashed his BYU moneyline. The host had Notre Dame money but is fine with the late pass interference no-call.
Game Balls
The episode closed on game balls, two apiece. Ryan McIntyre went with Auburn for beating number one on the road. Then he added Tennessee for the cigar game. The host gave one to North Carolina for its rivalry win. He had said Carolina should have been favored by 3.5, and it won by four. His second went to Big Blue Nation, because Kentucky is 6-1 and looks like this year’s Indiana. Meanwhile, the third man in the booth went with the BYU crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium. And his last one went to Army for scoring 56 while throwing for two yards.
