College Football Pick Of The Day (October 3rd): NCAA Week 5 Spread Pick
For today’s Week 5 college football pick of the day, I’m looking at the Eastern Michigan at UMass game. The Minutemen enter Saturday’s MAC matchup at McGuirk as a 5-point favorite, and the number feels light to me.
UMass is 4-0 and putting up 36.3 points per game while allowing just 12.8. These aren’t the Minutemen we’re used to. That defense sits top 15 nationally in scoring and top 10 against the run. They’ve held opponents to 74.8 rushing yards a game.
The UMass offense isn’t fancy, throwing for just 155 yards a game. However, William Watson is completing 74% of his throws with six touchdowns and only one pick. The ground game is where it’s at, averaging nearly 195 yards a game. I know not all games were against the same caliber of opponents. However, they already beat Rutgers on the road. They rolled Sacramento State. They’re 3-1 against the spread and 2-0 at home, where they have yet to trail.
Eastern Michigan is 2-3 and averaging just 19 points a game. The run game is close to last in the FBS, and the whole offense sits at 132nd in total yards. They got blasted 54-10 by Wisconsin and 35-7 at Michigan State. Their most convincing win came over the FCS team Lindenwood. The Eagles may have won the last few meetings, but these teams look different this year. UMass should control the line, keep the clock moving, and cover this short number. Umass -5 feels like a lock.
