Ryan made the case that the environment will be the story. Both teams are undefeated and unranked, and Ryan argued the Blacksburg crowd would be rowdy enough on national TV to matter more than the advanced-stats models the guys said have Pittsburgh well ahead in expected points added. He also pointed to Virginia Tech’s defense, which he thinks has been the difference for the program this year even though it gives up the occasional explosive play.
Colby brought up why bettors are drawn to Pittsburgh in the first place: a Pat Narduzzi clock-management decision from a prior game against Penn State when he settled for a late field goal while still trailing. He offered it as the reason people have been taking Pitt, then stayed on Virginia Tech, citing the environment and Pittsburgh’s quarterback facing what Colby called the toughest environment he’s ever played in.
Sean agreed on Virginia Tech for a similar reason. He called the first road game of the season for a young quarterback “a real thing.”
