The UFC stays on the road this week for a numbered event. UFC 328 comes to us from Newark, New Jersey with a highly anticipated bout between middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland in the main event. Plus, another title is up for grabs in the co-main event. Joshua Van makes his first defense of the flyweight belt when he takes on Tatsuro Taira. Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC 328
UFC Featherweight Fight: Pat Sabatini vs William Gomis
Start Time: Saturday (5/2) 5:00pm EST (Paramount+)
There’s some mid-Atlantic flair on the early portion of the UFC 328 prelims with Philadelphia’s own Pat Sabatini taking on France’s William Gomis. Sabatini has rattled off three straight wins and is looking to stake his claim to a ranked opponent. Standing in his way is a man who is no stranger to winning streaks. Gomis has won five of six fights in the UFC and is coming off a win over Robert Ruchala.
For this one, Sabatini’s grappling should make all of the difference. If you look back to Gomis’ recent fights, he gives up a lot of control time. Joanderson Brito took him down three times and accumulated over six minutes of control. Ruchala had him down twice and nearly filled a round worth of control time. That’s great news for Sabatini, who averages 4.48 takedowns per 15 minutes. Not only that, but he has controlled some of the very fighters who outgrappled Gomis. For instance, he took down the aforementioned Brito four times and had over 13 minutes of control.
The other advantage here for Sabatini is that he is also better at threatening submissions than a lot of the guys Gomis has faced. 13 of Sabatini’s 21 wins have come via submission and against high level opposition. Gomis should spend the bulk of this fight – however long it lasts – on his back.
