MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 3

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 12:45 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – Peacock

We whiffed on this NRFI play on Saturday, but we’re doubling down on it to close the weekend. While the Twins did get an early run off of Dylan Cease, I’m not going out of my way to trust their offense this year. They’re hovering around the middle of the pack in the majority of categories and outisde Byron Buxton, they don’t have a lot of pop. Plus, they’ll have to deal with last year’s playoff darling Trey Yesavage. He picked up right where he left off in his season debut last week – blanking the Red Sox over 5.1 innings.

To close out this NRFI, we’ll look to Joe Ryan to get the job done. He’s 4-2 at keeping the opening frame clean on the year and has had a pretty steady season overall. He’s got a 3.76 ERA and has kept his stikeout numbers up. The added bonus for him is that he gets a Toronto team that is struggling to find their offensive identity. Despite putting up an 11-spot last night, they are ranked 22nd in run scoring across the league. This time they won’t be facing a pitching making his MLB debut and it should help us get a clean first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 3: No (-140)

Clevelnd Guardians vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – ESPN Unlimited

The top of the first sees Aaron Civale look to start this NRFI the right way. He’s coming off of his best outing of the year. He threw 5.0 scoreless innings last time out against Kansas City and kept the basepaths quiet for the bulk of the game. With as accurate as he is, the real path to scoring early on him has to be the long ball. However, he’s been great at limiting that as well – allowing less than one per nine innings. Not only is Cleveland a below averaging home run hitting team, but they rank in the bottom third of the league in run scoring overall. Civale should be able to find us three quick outs.

In the bottom of the first, we’ll lean on one of the frontrunners for AL Rookie of the Year, Parker Messick. Messick has been straight dealing all year and comes into Sunday’s action with a 1.73 ERA on the year. He’s held every opponent he’s faced to three or less runs, and has kept it to two or less in five of six starts. That’s all without mentioning the fact that he has 38 strikeouts in just 36.1 innings this year. The Athletics have been better than expected with the bats, but they are still a below average scoring team. Messick is dialed in and should close it out for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 3: No (-115)
