The card down under is headlined by former champion Jack Della Maddalena as he tries to claw his way back into the title picture against Carlos Prates. Also, we have hot prospect Quillan Salkilld looking to build his name off of Beneil Dariush’s legacy. Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Perth
UFC Lightweight Fight: Kody Steele vs Dom Mar Fan
Start Time: Saturday (5/2) 4:00am EST (Paramount+)
Dom Mar Fan comes into his fight on home soil as a fairly sizable underdog in this fight. I think the primary reason for the line is the lack of knowledge on the fighter. If you’re not familiar with the fighter, he made his UFC debut at part of the Road to UFC series, which didn’t quite get the hype it deserved. In all of those fights, he showed his ability to grind out wins, put on a show in every avenue and scramble with the best of them. If he is able to blend those things together, it should be a rough night for Steele.
Steele showed in his last fight with Rongzhu that while he is good at being the hammer, he may not be able to be the nail. He got outclassed heavily on the feet – getting outstruck 126 to 59. He looked for takedowns, but when the bigger, stronger opponent stuffed those, he seemed to be out of ideas. This caused some cardio issues that really compromised his defense late in the fight.
Dom Mar Fan is known to be able to scramble and force people into gritty fights. Also, he’s also more than adept with his hands. If he can put those two things on Steele, we should see a nice upset early in Perth.
