MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 28

Colorado Rockies vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off the NRFI plays for Tuesday is one of our favorite fireballers – Chase Burns. Burns is rocking a 2.57 ERA over the first month of the season, but has actually been a touch better as of late. In his last two starts, he’s thrown 11.2 innings and only allowed two earned runs. Not only does that come out to a 1.54 ERA, but it also includes 12 strikeouts in that span. He’ll get a Rockies team that, despite playing at elevation, comes in at 23rd in the majors in runs per game (4.07 per). They’re also in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first.

Then, to round out this NRFI play, we get the return of Kyle Freeland. He had to skip a start due to dealing with some soreness, but even with that soreness he was straight dealing. He comes into Monday with a 2.30 ERA. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his three starts this year and has picked up the strikeout numbers from last year. On top of that, he gets a Cincinnati team that may be overperforming what their metrics show. While they are the class of the NL Central, they still rank 19th in the majors in run scoring and shouldn’t give us too many problems here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 28: No (-135)

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

For our second NRFI play, we’ll return to a series that bore fruit on Monday. The Red Sox are a gold mine for a number of reasons on the NRFI plays. The first is that their bats are well behind where they ought to be at this point in the season. Not only do they rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of runs scored, but they also are 29th in the league in first inning scoring. They have just five first inning runs all year over a 29 game schedule. Now they’ll face playoff hero Trey Yesavage in his season debut for the Blue Jays.

The other reason the Red Sox are an NRFI gift is that their pitching staff is solid. We’ll get another start from Payton Tolle today, the big Boston lefty who has electric stuff. In his first start of the year, he went 6.0 innings against the Yankees and allowed just one earned run. He added 11 strikeouts to the mix and showed why he should have been in the rotation from the start. The Blue Jays also have bats that are lagging behind expectations. They rank 27th in runs per game and are one of just five teams that have not cracked the 4.00 mark.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 28: No (-120)
