Cal State-Bakersfield at Ole Miss
Start Time: 7:30 PM EST
This qualified as the ‘WTF Game of the Night’. CSUB has played once before. In 2019, Ole Miss beat Cal State-Bakersfield, 83-67 in Oxford, MS.
Ole Miss is in year two with Chris Beard, and this definitely looks like the typical ‘Chris Beard Team’ with physicality and athleticism. The Rebels have three wins on the season, with all of them coming at home. They beat Memphis by six, UL-Monroe by 21, and SELA by 30.
Cal State-Bakersfield lost its head coach and a key assistant due to a scandal. This is the first time the interim head coach will take the Roadrunners outside of California.
Ole Miss has Austin Peay on deck before heading to California for the Acrisure Series. The Rebels should look to fine-tune their defense and solve a few issues on the offense in this one. Look for Ole Miss to lock down on defense and run a cleaner version of their offense than the chaos that occurred at times against Memphis. The Rebels have no reason to take their foot off the gas in this one and should roll against an undermanned Cal State-Bakersfield squad. Lock up the Rebels.
Best Bet: Ole Miss -25.5
Arizona at UCLA
Start Time: 10:00 PM EST
Arizona heads to Inglewood, CA to meet UCLA at the Intuit Dome. UCLA has struggled through an up-and-down start to the season so far. The Bruins are 3-0, but they only beat Eastern Washington by six, and won over both Pepperdine and West Georgia by 11 points. A blue blood like UCLA should be racking up 25-point+ wins over smaller programs. UCLA coach Mick Cronin has already wished he could fire himself in a post-game press conference.
Arizona also comes into this matchup at 3-0. The Wildcats beat the defending national champion Florida Gators on opening night in Las Vegas. They also rolled against Utah Tech and Northern Arizona.
The difference in this game will be the Wildcats’ size. They have true threats in the post with freshman star Koa Peat, senior forward Tobe Awaka, and junior center Motiejus Krivas. UCLA has looked a little soft in the middle this year, and that’s an area that Arizona should exploit. Donovan Dent is slated to return to the lineup for UCLA after missing one game due to a muscle strain. However, Arizona has senior guard Jaden Bradley, who has a bit more size and strength. Bradley won’t stop Dent completely, but he should do enough to make it difficult for him.
Lock up Arizona to get the win and cover the number. Mick Cronin will have the opportunity to motivate his team and get them into shape before conference play. Everyone wins.
Best Bet: Arizona -2.5
North Texas at St. Mary’s
Start Time: 10:00 PM EST
North Texas stays on the road as they travel to Moraga, CA for a matchup with St. Mary’s. The Mean Green have been away from Denton, TX for almost a week. They won at a ‘neutral site’ game against Loyola-Chicago in Hoffman Estates, IL, and had a disaster loss against Oregon State in Corvallis, OR.
The St. Mary’s Gaels are the new system play at home in their non-conference schedule. They have drilled Ohio, Chattanooga, and St. Thomas by a combined 77 points in their first three games at home this year. Now? They get a North Texas team on the final leg of a road trip. The same Mean Green, which has a new coach, a new system, and a new roster. St. Mary’s takes these games against mid-majors personally. Look for the Gaels to choke North Texas out and win by 20+. Lock up the Gaels at -12.5.
Best Bet: St. Mary’s -12.5
