Iona at Kansas City
Start Time: 1:00 PM EST
Iona heads to the Swinney Center for a matchup against the Kansas City Roos. Kansas City might be a bottom-50 team in the nation this year. Iona, while far from their days with Rick Pitino, is still a capable mid-major.
The Roos struggled to get past an NAIA team in their home opener. They lost to Southern Illinois by over 20 in their next match-up. Meanwhile, Iona beat Hofstra by eight in their season opener at home on Friday.
Iona can defend and has a mainly veteran main rotation. The Gaels have several true freshmen on their roster, but most are occupying the bench. They also have multiple older big men that the Roos lack.
Iona also did well in defending the three-point line against Hofstra. The Pride only shot 28% from beyond the arc on 7-for-25 shooting. UMKC’s offense is heavily focused on the three-point shot. Iona has shown it can defend the perimeter and should be able to deny looks to the Roos’ shooters. If three’s aren’t falling, the Roos aren’t scoring. Lock up Iona to defend the outside, and cover the spread in a mid-day matchup.
Keep in mind that UMKC is also really poor from the free-throw line. If this one gets close, a few missed free throws could be the difference on a cover.
Best Bet: Iona -4
Northeastern at Harvard
Start Time: 7:00 PM EST
Northeastern heads to Cambridge, MA, for a matchup with the Harvard Crimson. This game is a back-to-back road spot for Northeastern, which just beat Colgate on the road by three. Harvard is 2-0 with both wins coming at home. The Crimson wrecked MIT in their season opener, and snuck past New Hampshire in their second game of the year.
Harvard laid a heavy number in their matchup with New Hampshire and failed to cover the spread. This line is a little short because we’ve got Northeastern off the big win at Colgate and Harvard struggling to cover against a mediocre New Hampshire team.
Harvard has the better roster, and they just got a scare against New Hampshire. The Crimson should be locked in for this one. This is also an obvious letdown spot for Northeastern off the big win against one of the true Patriot League heavyweights.
Best Bet: Harvard -4.5
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Kansas
Start Time: 8:00 PM EST
This is one of the easiest handicaps on the board. Kansas is at home off a loss, and they get a low-major in a buy game. The Jayhawks will run this one up and blow the doors off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in The Phog.
Kansas just lost a road game against North Carolina by 13. The Jayhawks won their season opener by 43 against Green Bay in Lawrence, KS. Look for a game script similar to the Green Bay game, and very different from the North Carolina game.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has played two road games. They lost to SMU by 11 and dropped a game at Tarleton State by eight. They’ve been chippy, but they’re going into a hornet’s nest tonight. There’s also a big difference between playing Tarleton State in a sleepy spot and Kansas after a loss. The Jayhawks win by 30+. Lock up Kansas as long as the line is under 29.5.
Best Bet: Kansas -25.5
