NBA First Scorer Props – November 16
Milwaukee Bucks vs. Charlotte Hornets
Tipoff – 3:00 pm EST
Spectrum Center – Charlotte, NC
Broadcast – NBA TV
In this game, the tip advantage is just too much to overlook. Brook Lopez has been one of the very best in the league this year in getting his team the opening possession. He has won 75.0% of the tips he’s taken and has the Bucks well above league average in getting the first score. The Hornets, who are a little banged up, have been using Taj Gibson on the tip. He’s won just two of the five attempts he’s gotten so far. With tip winners getting 68.8% of the first scores on this season, we’ll go to Milwaukee for a pick.
There are plenty of big names that are getting lots of early action from this Bucks team. However, I’m going to go down ballot for my Saturday play here and take Taurean Prince. Prince has been pretty active in the early game over the last week or so. Although it took him awhile to get on the board against the PIstons on Thursday, the two games prior he got after it. He took one of the first three shots for the Bucks against the Raptors. The game prior he took two of the first three against the Celtics – both made three-pointers.
First Scorer Bet for November 16: Taurean Prince (+1200)
San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavericks
Tipoff – 10:00 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX
Broadcast – NBA TV
The Spurs are another team I like based on how well they do on the tip. They have won 76.9% of all tips this year and that puts them in the top three in the NBA. But that’s not the only reason I like the Spurs on Saturday. The other reason is that the Mavericks have been putrid in getting the first score. Despite being somewhat respectable on the tip, they are getting just a third of first scores in their games. Between that and the high win rate on the tip for the Spurs, we’ll go with San Antonio for a pick here.
Sometimes when I see someone’s name show up as the first bucket scorer frequently, I expect a regression to the mean. However, the Spurs have one first scorer force that just can’t be overlooked – Julian Champagnie. He’s not only scored the last two first buckets for the Spurs, but he’s had their first shot from the field in three straight games. He has also had one of the first two shots in each of the last five games. Despite all that action, his 8.8 shot attempts per game still have him as an 12-to-1 longshot. You have to love that number here.
