College Football Pick Of The Day (October 21st): NCAA Week 8 Spread Pick

For today’s Week 8 college football pick of the day, I’m looking at Saturday’s matchup between the 15th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota at Huntington Bank Stadium. Iowa is a 6-5-point favorite. They enter at 5-1, while Minnesota sits at 4-2.

Iowa’s defense has been elite, allowing just 14.5 points per game. They’ve been stuffing the run at a high rate as well. The Hawkeyes held Washington to negative rushing yards in a 41-24 road win and have two shutouts already this season.

Offensively, they’re averaging 31 points per game and have a strong ground game. Backup quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski gets the start at quarterback again after throwing for 202 yards and three touchdowns in his first start against Washington. Iowa is also coming off a bye week.

Minnesota is averaging 28.8 points per game, but they’ve been inconsistent. Drake Lindsey has the volume, but the Gophers were blown out 41-13 at Purdue and have struggled to establish the run against better fronts. Their defense is allowing 21.8 points per game, which is solid, but not at Iowa’s level.

This is a Floyd of Rosendale rivalry game, and Iowa has owned it lately. The Hawkeyes have won 10 of the last 11 meetings, including five straight in Minneapolis. They’ve outscored Minnesota 72-17 in the past two years. Both teams are coming off byes, but Iowa has been the more consistent and physical team. The Gophers will have home energy on Homecoming, yet Iowa is ready to deflate that energy.

The pick: Iowa -6.5
