After taking a quick trip home to the Apex, the UFC is back on the road. This time they head North of the border for UFC Edmonton. The headliner is a welterweight bout between local Mike Mallott and ranked contender, Joaquin Buckley. There are tons of bangers on this card and it’s sure to have the crowd on its feet.
In today’s column, we’re looking for the best play on the entire slate of prelim fights for you to exploit. Come check out our best bet for these UFC Edmonton prelims.

Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Edmonton
UFC Heavyweight Fight: Tanner Boser vs Jhonata Diniz
Start Time: Saturday (10/17) 5:00pm EST (Paramount+)
On Saturday, we’ll see a pair of heavyweights come in swinging with a chance to take a step forward in the division. Similarly to the main event, we have one hometown fighter and one invader looking to spoil the homecoming.
Tanner Boser is the fighter getting the warm crowd welcome, but it’s hard to find a reason other than that to back him. He’s lost each of his last three UFC fights (with a stint outside of the company in the middle). He also has lost five of his last six. The biggest problem is that he’s an undersized heavyweight who has no takedown game. Those traits are even worse given who he’ll be fighting here.
Jhonata Diniz is a former Glory kickboxer, who has gone 4-2 under the Endeavor banner. His pair of losses both came against ranked opponents and were largely due to takedown defense. With that not being an issue, I expect him to piece up his Canadian counterpart and cruise to an easy moneyline victory.
UFC Edmonton Prelim Pick: Jhonata Diniz ML (-230)
