Welcome to Week 6 of College Football action! We’re well into October now, and the cool weather is setting in on campuses across the nation. Upsets have still been turning in left and right every week all season long. The deeper we get into conference play, the more we’ll continue to see. Let’s head into The Upset Factory and cook up our College Football upset parlay for Week 6.
Last week we called our shot on Missouri to win. They not only won as outright underdogs, but they also blew out the #8-ranked Florida Gators 45-17. Purdue was our big dog, 9.5-point underdogs; they also secured the outright win. The Navy fell just short of taking down the Air Force, so the parlay didn’t hit. This is a great time to remind you to bet these teams individually as well. Underdog parlays are working against the grain as it is, and you don’t want to waste a big +280 upset like Purdue last week!
West Virginia (+130)
Country roads will lead us out to Morgantown, West Virginia, to kick off this week’s underdog talk. The West Virginia Mountaineers host the Arizona Wildcats in a Big 12 shootout. The Wildcats have started the season strong, going 4-1, their only loss coming in Provo to BYU. Tre Spivey, Arizona’s leading wide receiver, suffered a season-ending foot injury in the Wildcats’ win against Cincinnati on Saturday. Receivers Gio Richardson and Chris Hunter also suffered injuries, and their status is up in the air for this game.
West Virginia has had a wild season of ups and downs. They just hung on against Coastal Carolina, then went on the road and upset #25 Virginia. Oklahoma State was a game they were leading in the second half before a meltdown, and then last week was an epic shootout with Iowa State where the Cyclones just edged them out.
They are a volatile roller coaster team, but the ups and potential of this team is why I like them to pull the upset this week. Now, they head back to the comfort of home to take on a beat-up Wildcats team. Arizona’s rushing defense has been elite, but they haven’t seen a team like West Virginia yet. They held Cincinnati in check last week, but Cincinnati doesn’t have Michael Hawkins Jr. and Cam Cook. They’ll be the difference in this one as the WVU roller coaster hits one of those highs again.
North Carolina (+160)
Bill Belichick was the butt of every meme and joke last season as the Tar Heels head coach. But the greatest football coach to ever grace the game took that seriously, and he’s shown up in year two. They took down TCU in Ireland (a Week 0 highlight in this article). They almost defeated Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers, and then kept the game close against a good Notre Dame team, trailing by just one point in the third quarter.
Pitt has been one of the most impressive teams in the country, starting the season 5-0 and cracking the top 25 after a win over Virginia Tech. But in that win over Virginia Tech, Mason Heintschel, Pitt’s starting QB, tore his ACL. That means they’ll turn the reins over to Holden Geriner. Geriner is a fifth-year senior who’s had stints at Auburn and Texas State, but only had 21 pass attempts in his career prior to this season.
This game will be a defensive battle between two teams that have had strong defenses this season. Pitt’s win over Virginia Tech was impressive, but they were down 14-0 early in the game and had to come back. That game was their only big test of the year. Belichick was a menace against “rookie” quarterbacks in the NFL. This might not be the NFL, but Belichick will throw the book at this inexperienced quarterback and cause chaos with his elite defense.
Nebraska (+250)
The Cornhuskers of Nebraska are 5-0 for the first time since 2016. Ironically, 2016 is the last time the Huskers defeated a ranked team. This weekend, they host the #7-ranked reigning National Champion Indiana Hoosiers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Saturday. Nebraska’s yet to face a real big challenge, but they’ve done what they are supposed to do and beat bad teams. They’ve won both Big Ten games against Michigan State and Maryland and done so in convincing fashion.
Indiana obviously won it all in a dream season last year, but they lost a lot of players after that National Championship game. They are also 5-0, currently on a 21-game winning streak. Indiana has cruised through a majority of their season, but struggled against the one decent team they’ve seen in Northwestern. The Wildcats made mistake after mistake, and Indiana just couldn’t run away with it. Indiana struggled with a mobile Wildcat quarterback in Aidan Chiles.
That’s where Nebraska is going to give this team fits. Anthony Colandrea has been exactly what this Husker team has needed under Matt Rhule. A mobile quarterback who can make things happen. If the Huskers can protect the ball, they’ll stay in this game. Memorial Stadium is the third biggest city in Nebraska on game days, and it’ll be rocking for the 413th consecutive sellout. Those 90,000 raucous fans will be hoping to rush the field if the Huskers can pick up the massive upset. It’s been a long time, but all records are meant to be broken. Saturday, we find out if Husker football is back.
West Virginia + North Carolina + Nebraska Parlay (+1993)
