Colby’s case rests on Temple’s coach and the option. He said Temple should have beaten Navy last year, covered against both service academies it played, and the year before covered its two games against Kennesaw, which also runs the option. He admitted Army might bring the bigger crowd to Philadelphia. He’ll still take the 3.5, and he likes Temple to win outright.
Before anyone got to a pick, though, they had to relitigate Toledo. Temple led by 14 with 1:30 left, watched Toledo score, recover an onside kick and score again, and then lost in overtime after going for two with a pass. Colby had been holding a Temple money line ticket and couldn’t understand it: if you’ve run for 261 yards and been the better team all game, why try to end it early? Ryan agreed. Going for two there tells everyone you don’t like your chances if the game keeps going, and college overtime gives you every reason to keep playing.
Colby isn’t worried about the quarterback situation either. Temple has been splitting time between a Penn State transfer and a backup who has played plenty, and he says the backup just threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 66 and another score. One of the guys added that Temple hung around with Penn State for a while and that Army beat them up last year, so there’s some revenge in it, though Colby noted Temple still covered in that game.
Ryan’s contribution was the shortest handicap of the night: a home dog on a Friday. That made it unanimous, after a detour into whether Army’s logo, a sword through a skull, is real (Colby insists it is).
