Pete Golding, Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss Fend Off Lane Kiffin, LSU: A Star-Wars-like Storyline

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was a bubbling cauldron Saturday night in Oxford. Trinidad Chambliss showed off impressive poise in front of that atmosphere and performed at a level that looked like the nation’s best. Ole Miss and Pete Golding used a Star-Wars-like storyline to fend off LSU and Lane Kiffin.

Trinidad Chambliss tossed for 363 yards (33/48, 7.6 YPP), accounted for three touchdowns, and looked like the Heisman favorite against the Tigers. Ole Miss leaped out to a 17-0 lead and it was 24-7 at halftime. The quarterback that Kiffin signed as a transfer from DII Ferris State outplayed the QB that Kiffin signed for millions from Arizona State.

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium had a major impact on this game from the beginning to the end. On his way out, Kiffin said the fanbase rarely was a difference maker in games and often left early for the Oxford bar scene.

Those words came back to bite him when Sam Leavitt and the LSU offense were trying to operate during pivotal moments in the first and fourth quarters. The Tigers tallied just 31 yards on their first three drives that resulted in three punts. Vice versa, Ole Miss scored points on four of their five first half drives.

The biggest and best coaching move throughout the 60 minutes came from Golding and the Rebels sideline. LSU kicked a game-tying field goal with 11:21 to go in the fourth quarter. Ole Miss waltzed their way down the field and finished the drive with a Chambliss scramble for a touchdown. Up six points, Golding left the offense on the field. Chambliss used a loud cadence to draw the Tigers’ defense offsides twice. That set up a 1-yard run for a massive 2-point conversion run from Kewan Lacy.

The Star-Wars-like Storyline

Chambliss (Luke Skywalker) emerges from Week 3 as college football’s superstar. However, long before Chambliss, there was a relationship between Kiffin (Anakin) and Golding (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Most of the media attention fell on Kiffin, LSU’s chosen one, son of Monte Kiffin, not Golding, the one with two College Football Playoff wins on his resume.

The storyline going into Saturday night was that Kiffin’s and Golding’s units had sparred for years. Both coaches knew each other in and out. Cameras were following every step from Kiffin, yet Golding was the one super loose when embracing the Tigers head coach.

Just like in the intense battle between Skywalker and Kenobi, the more defensive and patient man won. The boiling atmosphere in Oxford tipped the scale even more in favor of the Rebels throughout the four quarters. Golding’s defense made fewer mistakes than Kiffin’s offense and Chambliss shined in the brightest of moments.

Here is the one positive takeaway that LSU fans can take from the Star-Wars-like storyline: after getting defeated by Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker (Kiffin) becomes Darth Vader, the coolest, most feared bad-ass villain in all of movies.
