MMA Regional Pick of the Week: Oktagon 87
Oktagon Lightweight Fight: Alex Hutyra vs Umut Birdal
Card Start Time: Saturday (4/25), 12:00pm EST (Oktagon TV)
Kicking off this fight card on Saturday afternoon is a fight between a pair of up and comers. The books for these early regional fights can rely to heavily on the results and opponents of early fights. As a result, you can find some tremendous value with a little background on the fighters.
Umut Birdal is one of those great values. He enters this fight as a massive underdog and it’s likely all due to his opponents. He’s fought entirely on the European regional circuit and his opponents have a combined 3-21 record in their career. However, that doesn’t tell the whole story about him. In fact, he’s a sharp striker on the feet and likes to put his foot on the gas. He pieces combinations together well and has even scored some takedowns – although those may be more due to the level of opponent.
On the other side, Hutyra has already made his Oktagon debut and won by second round submission. While that result is good, the fight was not as hot. He got clipped early by a 1-2 fighter, who was 2-8 in the ammy ranks before. Not only did Viktor Kovac clip him, but he had him in full mount early in the first with a chance to finish.
If Kovac can bring Hutyra to the brink early in a fight, I think Birdal has the abilities to take him out.
