MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 24
Los Angeles Angels vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kaufmann Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Noah Cameron takes to the hill in the top of the first and that might worry some NRFI bettors. Despite the high ERA, he’s actually been excellent the first time through the lineup. He’s 4-0 at keeping the first inning blank and has a 2.25 ERA in the first two innings of the game. The Angels are pretty much an average team in most offensive metrics, which shouldn’t be enough to get on Cameron in the early part of this one.
The bottom of the inning has another questionable starter. Yusei Kikuchi and his 5.63 ERA is probably not getting anyone sprinting to the ticket window. However, he is fresh off 6.0 scoreless innings against the Padres – fanning eight batters in the process. Overall, he’s struck out 27 batters in just 24.0 innings. It’ll help his case that the Royals are statistically the worst team in the first inning. Over their first 25 games, they’ve scored just two first inning runs, which comes out to 0.08 per game. Kikuchi should be able to run that one more game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 24: No (-125)
Athletics vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
Continuing the trend of guys with questionable ERAs, the Rangers will send Nathan Eovaldi to the bump. In his first two starts of the year, he got absolutely walloped. The ball was flying out the part left and right and he couldn’t get through five innings. Since then, he’s looked like his old self. He’s thrown 18.0 innings and allowed just four earned runs – a 2.00 ERA in that three-game run. The Athletics are one of the worst teams at scoring in the first inning. Their 0.16 runs per game has them ranked 28th in the majors.
Closing out this NRFI is Luis Severino. He’s another who’s statistics don’t look great on paper. A large part of that is due to how many hitters he’s been walking. Over the course of the season, he’s given out 20 free passes in 24.2 innings. That obviously doesn’t instill confidence, but when he isn’t walking people, he does look solid. Texas is a below average team in drawing walks and did strike out seven times in 6.0 innings the last time they faced Severino. Look for him to keep those walks in check for at least three outs to help us cash this.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 24: No (-115)
