MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 8

Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, the Mariners and some of their big boppers come to the plate. The top of that order has been pretty strong, ranking just outside of the top 10 in first inning runs this year. However, I’m putting my faith in Will Warren, who has been solid for the Yankees lately. He did get hit around pretty bad by the Blue Jays the last time out, but had been on a nice roll before that. In his previous four starts, he had allowed just five total earned runs – which included two scoreless starts. His ERA in that span was 1.96 and he struck out 28 batters in 23.0 innings. Let’s get that version of him back here and start the NRFI right.

The bottom of the first should also be a bit of a sweat. It’s never good to go against the Yankees’ bats, but the Yankees haven’t really been themselves lately. They did snap their six-game losing streak on Sunday, but it took them until the second time through the order to get anything going. They’ll face Logan Gilbert in this one, who moved his ERA down to 3.40 in his last start. In that start, he allowed just one earned run to the Royals while striking out seven.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 8: No (-115)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game will involve quite a bit less worry about the bats. The Pirates can’t seem to hit their way out of a paper bag as of late. Going into Monday’s action they had scored just six runs in their last five games (or 1.2 runs per game). The Royals have been a bit better lately, but they are still dead last in the league in runs per game (3.34 per).

The pitching matchup is one that we can trust as well. The Pirates send out Mitch Keller, who carries a 3.64 ERA into action on Tuesday. While he does have 10 losses on the year, he’s throwing great games lately. He’s allowed no more than two earned runs in any of his last four starts. Plus, he’s coming off a start where he held St. Louis scoreless over 7.0 innings.

Keller’s counterpart, Seth Lugo, has even more impressive lines. He’s rocking a 2.65 ERA and has been downright amazing in his last five starts. Over that span, he’s allowed just three runs in 30.0 innings. That comes out to a 0.90 ERA in a month’s worth of games. With the Pirates being as bad as they have been lately, you have to imagine he can get us three quick ones to cash the NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 8: No (-130)
