MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 1

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Cardinals will be the first team to the plate in our first NRFI play on Tuesday. They are a top ten team when it comes to run scoring. However, they have two things working against them in this one. The first is that they just aren’t scoring many of those runs in the first inning. They rank 28th in the league in that metric with just 0.35 first inning runs per game. The second thing they have working against them is Paul Skenes. The 23-year old flamethrower enters action on Tuesday with a 2.12 ERA and 110 strikeouts in just 106.0 innings.

Maybe we don’t have the name brand pitching in the bottom of the inning, but I like Andre Pallante’s chances of putting up a first inning zero. The first reason why is that he’s been exceptional in the first inning this year. He’s taken the ball 15 times for the Cardinals, and only twice has he allowed a run in the opening frame. On top of that, he’ll be facing the Pirates, who have looked ugly at the plate. They rank 27th in runs score on the year and 26th in runs scored in the first inning. All of that should help lead us to cash this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 1: No (-160)

Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast –MLB TV

For our second NRFI, we look at a couple of offenses that are much more high powered. Both teams rank in the top half of the league when it comes to run scoring. Paradoxically, they are both in the bottom half of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning, which should help us in this one.

The pitching matchup should help as well. The Mets send out Clay Holmes to do the honors in this one. He’s been stellar as a member of their starting rotation. He’s sporting a 2.97 ERA heading into Tuesday’s action and has been even sharper lately. In his last four starts, he’s only allowed more than one earned run one time.

The bottom of the inning has a hot pitcher on the bump as well. Freddy Peralta gets the ball to close out this NRFI. His ERA sits at just 2.90 with 98 strikeouts in just 93.0 innings. He also has a solid history keeping the Mets quiet. In three career starts against New York, he has a 2.30 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 1: No (-125)
