MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 7
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
We start off the new week with an NRFI play on a pair of teams that just don’t score in the first inning. Pittsburgh is one of the very worst in the league in that category. They rank 28th with 0.35 first inning runs scored per game. The Royals are also in the bottom third of the league at 0.44 per game.
However, it isn’t just the bat hitting that we like about this matchup. Each team sends out a pitcher who has been performing well as of late. The first to the bump is Noah Cameron, who is rocking a 2.56 ERA on the year. He’s also seen a recent uptick in his strikeout numbers. Over his last three starts, he has 18 strikeouts in 19.0 innings. For a guy who is already getting weak contact numbers, that’s a great new asset.
The bottom of the inning belongs to Andrew Heaney. His surface numbers don’t look nearly as good as Cameron’s – largely due to a couple of really bad outings, but he is coming off his best start of the year. Last time out, he threw 6.2 scoreless innings against the Cardinals and struck out seven. He also only allowed three hits and a single walk in that game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 7: No (-125)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Blues Jays get first crack in this one, which might scare some people off the NRFI. They have been a solid hitting team this year, so I understand the hesitation. On the flip side, not a lot of that production comes early in the game as they are in the bottom half of the league when it comes to first inning runs. They’ll also have to face Sean Burke, who has been outstanding lately. In his last three outings (16.1 innings), he’s allowed just two earned runs and stuck out 19. He should be able to keep up that run and get us a quick three outs.
In the bottom of the first, the White Sox will face off with Jose Berrios. Berrios threw against these same White Sox just over two weeks ago and he straight shoved in that one. He finished the game having gone 7.2 innings with no earned runs, and only five runners reached base on him. That’s not a surpise as Berrios has been good and the White Sox are one of the three worst teams in the league in run scoring. He should be able to duplicate that performance here too.
