NBA First Scorer Props – February 10
San Antonio Spurs vs. Washington Wizards
Tipoff – 7:00 pm EST
Capital One Arena – Washington, DC
Broadcast – NBA TV
Monday’s opening game features a pair of teams that have come in under league average in terms of scoring first. Neither have blown anybody away with their numbers, but the Spurs have been nominally better. With that being said, there is a massive difference on the tip win rates. The Spurs rank 2nd in the NBA with a 75.5% win rate. The Wizards are, again, below league average in this metric as well. With the tip winner getting 66.3% of all the first buckets at this stage of the season, you have to go with San Antonio here.
Now if we want to get specific with a player, the high volume answer is Devin Vassell. If you take the first three shots taken by the Spurs over the last three games, Vassell has taken 44.4% of those shots. Additionally, he is making at a much high clip than many of the other players who show up in those logs. With that being the case, and a big number next to Vassell’s name, we’ll ride with him here.
First Scorer Bet for February 10: Devin Vassell (+750)
New Orleans Pelicans vs. Oklahoma City Thunder
Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
Paycom Center – Oklahoma City, OK
Broadcast – NBA TV
As mention above, the tip win is a great indicator as to which team will score first. The Pelicans continue to be one of the very worst teams in the league in that stat. They rank 29th right now – only ahead of the Bucks. Their 30.8% comes in 15.4% behind the Thunder’s team average. That lead doesn’t even account for the return of Chet Holmgren, who is the best on his team in winning the jumps over the last two years. With him back in the circle, I like the Thunder to win the tip and score first here.
If we’re going to ride someone, I like the idea of Chet Holmgren turning the corner offensively here. He had a bit of a slow first game back from injury and then took a game off after to rest. However, I think we see the Thunder try to get him going early in a game that really shouldn’t be all that competitive. If that’s the case, I could see him letting one fly from three-point right off the bat and helping us cash this.
First Scorer Bet for February 10: Chet Holmgren (+550)
