NBA First Scorer Props – February 7
Miami Heat vs. Brooklyn Nets
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
Barclays Center – Brooklyn, NY
Broadcast – NBA TV
With a quick look at early game stats, this might seem like a good spot to make a play on the Heat. Their tip win percentage is 23.7% higher than the Nets and with tip winners getting 65.8% of first buckets that year, that’s not to be ignored. However, that overlooks the fact that Kel’el Ware is not taking the tips. He has taken eight this year and only one two – one of which was against Nikola Vucevic, who is the worst in the league at winning tips. When you also consider that the Heat are scoring first on a much lower clip than their tip win percentage, than it’s looking more and more like a spot for the Nets.
If we’re looking to the Nets, one play that I’m interested in is the line on Keon Johnson. Sure, he might not be the household name people look for in first buckets, but he has taken one of their first three shots in two of their last three games. That fact includes that he took the first shot for the team in one of them. Plus, when you consider the size the Heat are going with on the inside with Ware and Bam Adebayo, it’s a good idea to look to a guard.
First Scorer Bet for February 7: Keon Johnson (TBD)
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Detroit Pistons
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
Little Caesars Arena – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – ESPN
The Pistons come home on Friday and should be sporting a solid advantage when it comes to the first bucket. The first piece of that advantage is the fact that they have a solid 9.0% lead when it comes to winning the tip. Not only are they getting the first possession, but they are getting the best of those as well. They rank in the top ten in terms of first scores on the year, whereas the 76ers are simply a middle of the pack team with plenty of banged up pieces.
The Pistons roster is in flux a bit, but if we’re looking for a consistent name – how about Tobias Harris? He took both of the first two shots in Detroit’s last game. Not only that, but he was in the first three shots of the shot log in three of the last four. With Cade Cunningham listed as questionable for the night, it could open it up even further for our play here.
First Scorer Bet for February 7: Tobias Harris (TBD)
