NBA First Scorer Props – December 11

Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks

Tipoff – 7:00 pm EST
Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
Broadcast – ESPN

The Hawks in this NBA Cup quarterfinals game may not have home court advantage, but they do have a lot of the early game advantages at their disposal. They have been much better on the tip this year as a whole. They have a 10.5% lead over the Knicks in that category – and that lead expands if Karl-Anthony Towns is on the jump. The difference on the first bucket is pretty similar. The Hawks also lead that category to the tune of 10.3%. As a result of those sizeable leads, we’ll grab someone from the Hawks here.

The Hawks have spread their first buckets out well this year. They have six different players that have scored first. However, just two of them have scored first more than three times – Jalen Johnson and Zaccharie Risacher. While Jalen Johnson has the majority of them, I like the early action I’ve seen out of Risacher. He regularly gets one of the first shots of the game. However, considering his low scoring totals, we’re still getting a great number on this prop.

Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets

Tipoff – 9:30 pm EST
Toyota Center – Houston, TX
Broadcast – TNT

It’s the home squad in the nightcap with all the early game bonuses. The Rockets actually lead the league in first scores in 2024-25. They are scoring first 69.6% of the time. Meanwhile, the Warriors rank in the bottom third of the league in theat category. The lead is even more pronounced in the tipoff category. The Rockets are winning the tip 29.4% more often than the Warriors are. In fact, the Warriors are next to last in that category – only ahead of the Bulls. With the tip winner getting the first score more than 65% of the time, we have to go to Houston for a pick here.

In this NBA Cup game, I also like another long shot to score first. In each of the last two games, Dillon Brooks has taken one of the first three shots of the game. He may not be getting a ton of action after that fact, but if you roll it back over a longer stretch, that early action stands up. They regularly let him fire off a deep shot in the early minutes – and we’ll bank on him getting one to drop on Wednesday.
