NBA First Scorer Props – November 22

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Houston Rockets

Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
Toyota Center – Houston, TX
Broadcast – NBA TV

In Friday’s NBA action, there are plenty of spots where we can see some big descrepancies in the early scoring data. One of the biggest you’ll find comes to us from Houston. The Rockets and the Trail Blazers have pretty similar tipoff success rates. The Rockets have a slight advantage with 56.3% wins compared to 53.3% for Portland. However, the conversion rates wildly differ. Houston is scoring first in 81.3% of the games, which makes them number one in the NBA. The Trail Blazers, meanwhile, are on the board first just 26.7% of the time, which puts them in 29th in the league. With that kind of difference, we gave to side with the home team here.

In each of the last three games, the Rockets have scored first and it’s been the same player. Alperen Sengun has an incredible run of three straight first buckets. If you look at the historical data, that’s pretty unlikely to happen and four straight is borderline unheard of. As a result, this is a great spot to pivot from him to another high frequency scorer. Jalen Green has taken one of the first three shots in each of those last three games and has a slew of first buckets to his name already this year. Let’s get on him to break this trend.

First Scorer Bet for November 22: Jalen Green (+550)

Atlanta Hawks vs. Chicago Bulls

Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
United Center – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – NBA TV

While the last discrepancy was a big one, this one might be even more ridiculous. That’s because this one is both on the tip and on the first score. The Bulls have won only one tipoff all year. That gives them a 6.7%  success rate, which is, of course, good enough for dead last in the NBA. They are also dead last in the NBA when it comes to scoring first – which may be no surprise. They are scoring first just 20.0% of the time. On the other side, the Hawks rank 2nd in first buckets – only behind the Rockets. They have scored first in 75.0% of games. That number should go up here.

While the Hawks spread their early shots around, there is a clear trend for who the Bulls give up early buckets to. Their last three games have seen Alperen Sengun, Jalen Duren, and Brook Lopez score first. All three of those are big men who can score in the middle. Clint Capela is the answer to that for the Hawks. Not only does he fit the bill, but he has taken one of the first shots for the Hawks in three straight games as well.

First Scorer Bet for November 22: Clint Capela (+600)
