In terms of one-game slates, you’d be hard pressed to find one as catered to the first bucket crowd as well as this one. There is a clear leader for the first bucket in this game and it’s Utah. The Jazz have been the best team in the league at scoring first. They have been first on the board in eight of the ten games they’ve played so far. While their tips take a bit of a hit with John Collins returning and sending Walker Kessler to the bench, Collins has still been better than Daniel Gafford over the last two years. Plus, with the Mavericks scoring just 27.3% of the first baskets, you have to side with the home team here.
The trends for the Jazz are pretty clear when it comes to the first bucket. A lot of the action comes from the inside for them. Despite having some range threats on their squad, they like to work the ball into the paint early. The trend continued in Collins’ first game on the court. He not only took the first shot attempt for the Jazz, but he also took the second. With Daniel Gafford and his below average defensive rating in the middle, I see no reason to think Collins won’t get after it here.
