NBA First Scorer Props – November 6
Cleveland Cavaliers vs. New Orleans Pelicans
Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
Smoothie King Center – New Orleans, LA
Broadcast – NBA TV
The data is pretty clear about the first bucket here. The Cavaliers have one of the biggest in terms the early game data on all of Wednesday. Jarrett Allen was one of the best tip guys in the league last year and has picked right up where he left off. He’s grabbed 75% of the tips from his team’s eight games. They haven’t converted as well as I would like, but I still love them getting the first possession.
That possession should be even easier to come by with the Pelicans rotating guys in the tipoff spot. Lately it’s been rookie Yves Missi who has won just a single tip in his pro career. That matches the rest of the guys that the Pelicans have sent out – winning just two of the eight on the year. With the tip winner taking home 63.9% of all first buckets this year, we’ll go with Cleveland.
While you’re looking for a name on the Cavaliers, it might be easy to look to their MVP candidate Donovan Mitchell as the chalk. He has scored first twice already on the short season and gets plenty of early looks. However, I’m going to go with another name getting the rock early. Darius Garland took two of the first four shots for Cleveland last game. The game before he took both of the first two. I’m expecting those early looks to pay off here.
First Scorer Bet for November 6: Darius Garland (+700)
Chicago Bulls vs. Dallas Mavericks
Tipoff – 8:30 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX
Broadcast – NBA TV
We’re now seven games into the season and the Mavericks are now the only team to not score first. They are 0-for-7 on the year, which is probably partially due to their 1-for-7 performance on the tip. The Bulls haven’t been much better. In fact, they have the same rate on the tip thanks to the always questionable tip work of Nikola Vucevic. However, they not only have a first bucket, but the time it takes for the first bucket to be scored in their games is much longer than the Mavericks. That let’s us know they’re getting stops and forcing the issue. I’m expecting it to pay off on Wednesday night with a first bucket of their own.
The Bulls may not be getting a lot of first baskets, but they do have a lot of consistency when it comes to the early shots. In each of the last four games, the same player took their first attempts from the field. That man is Josh Giddey. There’s no reason to expect that the trend gets bucked here. Plus, with as many first buckets as he had last year (11), we’d consider him a top threat anyways.
First Scorer Bet for November 6: Josh Giddey (+850)
