Bye Week: Steelers and 49ers

We are back to the Byes for Week 9. We also have quite a few divisional matchups, which should tell us a lot about possible contenders going forward. While injuries are starting to pile up for some teams, other teams are finally getting healthy and hitting their stride. Also, we’ll see quite a few players in new colors this week as the trade deadline looms.

Lock Selection: Bills

A lot was made about the Buffalo Bills coming into the 20204 season. Analysts questioned how they would look without a number-one receiver with the departure of Stefon Diggs. They weren’t even favored to win their division after four straight division titles — a bit disrespectful. All the worries seem to be dissipated as the Bills currently sit comfortably in first place in the AFC East at 6-2.

On Sunday, the Bills will take on a division rival desperate to get back in the win column. The Miami Dolphins have struggled this season. They have dealt with a ton of injuries and, overall, have been inconsistent in all aspects of the game. Yes, Tua is back, but I have full confidence the Bills will be up for a team they love to beat up on.

If it wasn’t made clear last season, the Bills simply own the Dolphins, especially in Orchard Park. Buffalo has won eight straight against the Dolphins at home. I don’t think that changes in this one. Buffalo in a route!

Contrarian Selection: Commanders

We’ve been fading the Giants, and without Andrew Thomas in at left tackle, why not keep it going? Washington pulled off the Houdini act in Week 8, defeating the Bears with an all-time Hail Mary play. I know what you’re going to say; they should have lost the game. Yes, you would be correct, but I think there are definitely some positives to take away from how Washinngton’s spotty pass defense looked.

Washington was able to get consistent pressure on Caleb Williams. Williams was throwing into tight windows all game, and it took him until the fourth quarter to really get it going. By far, Washington’s worst unit is their pass defense, but they seem to have taken some strides in the right direction.

Obviously, without Andrew Thomas, I’m expecting Washington to continue to get to the quarterback against New York. I am a bit concerned with Tyrone Tracy, who had another huge game for Big Blue on Monday Night Football. Also, throughout his career, Daniel Jones seems to play his best football against Washington. Also slightly concerning, but this is a new team in DC.

If Washington can limit Tracy and prevent the Giants from getting out to a big lead, I think they coast to victory in this division spot.
