MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 5
Cleveland Guardians vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:15 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – Apple TV
Guardians are first to the plate in this one and they have struggled in that facet this year. They rank in the bottom third of the majors in terms of run scoring and put up just one on Thursday night. They are also below average when it comes to scoring in the first inning. That’s good news for Kumar Rocker as he looks to keep his incredible run going. Over the last four starts, he’s kept his opponents scoreless in three of them. In that span he has posted a 1.52 ERA with 17 strikeouts. He should be able to keep that going against a sub-par offense.
Speaking of sub-par offenses, the Rangers are actually a touch worse than the Guardians at the plate this year. They rank 24th with 4.02 runs per game this year and have been even worse than that over their last three games. That’s not exactly a good look for a lineup that is going to be facing Parker Messick. The big lefty has been on a tear this season with a 2.21 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 69.1 innings. He’s a top candidate for AL Rookie of the Year and should be adding to that candidacy here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 5: No (-140)
Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 8:15 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – Apple TV
Our second NRFI selection for the day starts with Zebby Matthews on the bump. Matthews got hammered by the Pirates last time out, but that is far more telling of what Pittsburgh is doing at the plate right now than what Matthews is capable of. Prior to that, he had posted a 2.67 ERA and had struck out 17 in 19.0 innings. Kansas City is one of six teams that have not cracked 4.00 runs per game in the majors. Given that fact, I look for Matthews to return to that prior version of himself here.
In the bottom of the first we’ll get a much better lineup. The Twins rank in the top ten of runs scored in the league, but have struggled at the start of games. While they rank in the top third in runs scored, they rank in the bottom third of first inning runs scored. Michael Wacha should be able to get off to a good start against them. He enters Friday’s action with a 3.23 ERA and is in the top 40 of the league in terms of strikeouts.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 5: No (-120)
