NBA First Scorer Props – October 24

San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavericks

Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX
Broadcast – TNT

Our first selection for Thursday comes with one of the easier tipoffs to call. The Spurs send the long-armed Victor Wembanyama to the circle to try to grab the first possession of the game. In his rookie year, he was solid on the tip – grabbing 62.5% of all of his jumps and jumping 72 times on the year. While those numbers aren’t as high as they could be, they are well above average and even further above what we see for the Mavericks. It seems like Daniel Gafford will handle big man duties for them to start. He was the jump guy for the majority of the season for the Wizards and managed just 38.6% of all tips. That 24.9% advantage means the Spurs should easily snag the first possession and should be our front runner for the first score.

It may be the chalky play of the day, but I think there’s still going to be value on Victor Wembanyama’s spot here. He was, by far, the Spurs guy with the most first scores last year. He scored first 14 times on the year, and that’s with taking a handful of games off. He’ll also get a relatively soft matchup defensively in Daniel Gafford. Gafford held a defensive rating of 112.2 last season, which was decently below the league average of 116.1. He’s also unlikely to handle Wemby well on the outside. As a result, I think Wembanyama has a big day and it should start right away.

First Scorer Bet for October 24: Victor Wembanyama (+500)

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Sacramento Kings

Tipoff – 10:00 pm EST
Golden 1 Center – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – NBA TV

Last year, there was only one player in the league who had at least 50% of his teams tips and had a worse win rate than Domantas Sabonis (Isaiah Hartenstein for those curious). He won just 28.6% of all of his tips. Rudy Gobert wasn’t great in his own right, but he did manage to get 46.8% of all of his tips. That kind of margin should be enough for them to get the first tip. Also, while the Kings overperformed their tip average with first buckets – the Timberwolves solidly defended their tip wins as well. As a result, we’ll go with a member of the Timberwolves.

Minnesota doesn’t look exactly like they did last year, but one face returning to the lineup did have a ton of first buckets last year. Jaden McDaniels had double digit first buckets for the Timberwolves last season, which represented a quarter of their overall successes. With Karl-Anthony Towns out of the picture, it may opened up even more of the offense for him. Also, while he wound up with an ugly night on the box score in their first game, he did take two of the first three shots they had – making the first as well.

First Scorer Bet for October 24: Jaden McDaniels (+800)
