Philadelphia Eagles vs New York Giants: 4 Iconic Moments from History

Everyone knows about the Eagles/Giants feud. If you ask us, it’s one of the best in sporting history. And let’s tell you, there has been some history – iconic history. Read on to find out more.

The Original Miracle at the Meadowlands (1978)

The original miracle at the Meadowlands (1978). Nobody can forget about this. Well, they can, because people focus on the latest miracle at the Meadowlands in 2010 – but we’ll get into that later.

One of the most famous blunders – and considered one of the great meltdowns in NFL history – happened on November 18th, 1978 and for once, changed how all teams approached the end of the game. It happens in every game: The New York Giants were 17:12 ahead against the Philadelphia Eagles, and there were only a few seconds left on the clock. They should have kneeled and secured the victory. Then, Joe Pisarcik, quarterback of the New York Giants, and Larry Csonka, in charge of running the middle, couldn’t run the play right, allowing Eagles defender Edwards to pick up the ball and run into the touchdown zone.

This unfortunate incident came to be termed the “Miracle at the Meadowlands”.

Chuck Bednarik’s Hit on Frank Gifford (1960)

Out of all the rivalry games with some big hits, none are bigger than a tackle that Chuck Bednarik put on Frank Gifford on November 20th, 1960.

This old-school black and white video shows it on YouTube.

In that match, the Eagles edged the score at 17-10, a much-deserved victory for the Eagles on their way to the 1960 NFL Championship. Bednarik smashed into Gifford with, we’d say, the biggest tackle in NFL history. One image of Bednarik towering over Gifford, still rolling around on the floor. Imagine the force of that tackle – it’s probably breaking every bone in our non-NFL body. That one picture really shows the rivalry between the Eagles and the Giants.

Brian Westbrook’s Game-Winning Punt Return (2003)

In a game played in 2003 between the Eagles and the Giants, the two teams were still looking for their first wins of the season – that’s always a recipe for tension.

With just 1:34 remaining in the game, the Giants were leading 10-7 and had the Eagles hunting. But when Eagles’ punter Jeff Feagles snapped the ball, Brian Westbrook, the Eagles’ running back, caught the ball and returned it for 84 yards, defeating the Giants and winning the game for Philadelphia.

It was such a good game that changed the season – the last-minute tense play made it one of the biggest moments in the history of the clubs for us. Thanks to Westbrook, the Philadelphia Eagles won eight in a row and reached the headquarters of the National Football League that year.

Miracle at the New Meadowlands (2010)

The young ‘ns think this is the original miracle at the meadowlands – we all remember the original.

With just over eight minutes to go in the game and having a 31-10 lead, the Giants were nearing what was considered a routine win against the Eagles on December 19th, 1979. Three quick touchdowns, thanks to quarterback for the Eagles, Michael Vick, brought the Eagles back into the game to tie it at 31 with just seconds on the clock.

With 14 seconds left, the Giants had to kick the ball away. Punter Matt Dodge didn’t try to kick the ball out of bounds; he blasted the ball right into the hands of Dean Jackson. After the snap, DeSean Jackson dropped the ball but picked it up and ran 65 yards for a touchdown before the game ended, making quite an iconic comeback for the Giants. With that comeback, the Philadelphia Eagles won the match 38-31 and became the first team in NFL history to execute a game-winning return for a touchdown as time expired.
