NBA First FG Props – March 21
Utah Jazz vs. Dallas Mavericks
Tipoff – 8:30 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, Texas
Broadcast – NBA League Pass
When you’re looking at the tipoff and first field goal stats for the year, there are a lot of close games tonight. This is not one of them. The Mavericks are second in the league when it comes to getting the first score (trailing only the Celtics). The Jazz, meanwhile, are dead last with just over a 30% success rate.
The tip data is a little closer than the overall, but it still favors the Mavericks. They have a 7.6% lead on the year over the Jazz, who again are near the bottom of the league. That advantage has gone down a tick with Daniel Gafford on the jump, but it’s still present.
It may be all Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving when you see Mavericks highlights, but there’s a different name getting busy at the beginning of games. The aformentioned Daniel Gafford has one of their first three shots in three straight games, including two of the first three in one of those.

New York Knicks vs. Denver Nuggets
Tipoff – 9:00 pm EST
Ball Arena – Denver, Colorado
Broadcast – NBA League Pass
The numbers on the first bucket here are pretty close. The knicks only trail the Nuggets, who are sixth in the league, by about 5% in their success rate. However, the Nuggets are far more likely to get the early possession here. Not only do they have a 13.8% lead in win rate as a team, but Nikola Jokic has a way bigger lead on Isaiah Hartenstein. In fact, that lead is 36.6%, which is one of the wider leads you’ll find out there.
Like with the Mavericks, Nikola Jokic is the name you associate with the Nuggets. However, Michael Porter Jr. is the guy getting a lot of the early looks. He’s taken one of the first three shots in back to back games and I like his matchup defensively with the Knicks.
