Super Bowl 57 Referee: Carl Cheffers
2022 Regular Season
Cheffers is a referee who has not been afraid to throw the yellow flag, especially against the Chiefs. During the 2022 regular season, Cheffers led all officials in the number of penalties called. In fact, in back-to-back seasons, Cheffers led the league in accepted penalties called.
This season, Cheffers called a total of 214 penalties. 117 of those penalties were called against road teams. In addition, Cheffers led all officials in penalties per game. He was tied with Brad Allen in penalties per game averaging 14.35. Furthermore, Cheffers led all referees in penalty yardage per game close to 110 per contest.
Cheffers officiated only one game this season involving the Philadelphia Eagles. That was the Week 18 matchup against the New York Giants. The Eagles were a 14-point favorite and ended up winning the game 22-16 to clinch the NFC East. Let’s not forget, this was a game where the Giants sat most of their key player in preparation for the playoffs.
Super Bowl History
This is the first time in 35 years that a referee has officiated a Super Bowl twice in as many as three years. Cheffers officiated the infamous “28-3” Super Bowl where the Patriots erased a 25-point deficit and won the game in overtime. Additionally, Cheffers officiated the Super Bowl 55 victory for Tom Brady and the Buccaneers over the Kansas City Chiefs.

History With The Kansas City Chiefs
There is a bit of “history” with Carl Cheffers officiating Kansas City Chiefs football games. As I mentioned above, Cheffers officiated the Super Bowl 55 Chiefs’ loss to the Buccaneers. In that game, Cheffers called 11 penalties for 120 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs. Furthermore, during the regular season, Cheffers officiated two games involving the Kansas City Chiefs.
First, Cheffers officiated the Week 5 Chiefs home game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chiefs were a 7.5-point home favorite and ended up winning the game 30-29. In this game, Cheffers only called a total of 16 penalties for 171 yards. In particular, Cheffers called five penalties on the Chiefs for 72 yards.
Furthermore, Cheffers officiated the Week 15 matchup between the Chiefs and the Texans. The Chiefs were a 14-point road favorite and ended up squeaking out a 30-24 victory in overtime. In this matchup, the Chiefs were penalized 10 times for a total of 102 yards. Compare that to the Texans being penalized only four times for 33 yards.
The most interesting fact that stands out about the Kansas City Chiefs and Carl Cheffers is that Cheffers accounted for 17% of the total penalties called against the Chiefs this season and 20% of the total penalty yards. However, historically, the Chiefs are 8-2 straight up and 3-7 against the spread with Cheffers being the lead official.
Super Bowl Prop Bets
With the information, we have about Carl Cheffers and his tendency to throw flags there are penalty prop bets available to bet on for the Super Bowl. You have to shop around for this but the prop bets are out there. Now, people will make the counter-argument that the usual crew Cheffers officiates regular season games with is completely different, the average number of penalties called remains on the higher side.
As I mentioned above, Cheffers has officiated two Super Bowls over the past decade and has thrown a combined 28 penalties. I would bet the Over 10 on total accepted penalties and over on penalty yardage for this game!
