Our Picks
- Ryan Kramer (@KramerCentric): Memphis -3
- Sean Green (@SeanTGreen): Memphis -3
- Colby Dant (@TheColbyD): Memphis -3
The segment started with a surprise at the price. Colby said he had been waiting to see Memphis as a heavy favorite and figured the line would be six or seven, which would have sent him to VCU. His concern is that Memphis under its current coach is better as an underdog and tends to stumble when favored against a decent team. A short number took that argument away.
The guys then checked the numbers. KenPom had it at two and Torvik had VCU as the favorite, and the guys landed on Memphis minus three. Colby stayed with Memphis, noting the team looked awesome against Iowa State. Ryan agreed Memphis had to be favored here.
The rest was soft factors. Colby called Memphis a basketball city that loves to turn out for its team. A host added that it is the first Saturday game of the season and liked that angle too. Sean said Memphis probably carries momentum from Iowa State and that he is not dying to back VCU on the road as a short favorite. His line was that at five and above he is on VCU, but three and below he takes Memphis.
Colby closed with the NIL angle, saying the coach gave a lot of his own money to bring players in. Another host noted the coach is also getting paid well, though kicking some back upstairs is a good look.
