The segment started with the number. The guys said Oakland had just played Michigan well, and one of them asked who Stanford is to be laying a big number this early. Stanford’s recent form fed that. The guys watched Stanford beat Eastern Washington by nine after Eastern Washington held a second-half lead, and by their read Stanford was not setting the world on fire. They like the young talent but called the team incredibly young.
One of the guys said he got to interview Stanford’s coach, who told him they had a lot of work to do and were really, really young. His takeaway was that young teams struggle with consistency. Another host added that Stanford might become something later in the season, but 14.5 this early against a team that was competitive with Michigan for most of the game was too much.
Ryan was on Oakland too, with a caution. The guys fall into this trap, he said, of watching the early rounds of the weaker conferences and then backing those teams against much better ones. He worried the Oakland game they watched was swaying him. Someone pointed out Oakland has been great as a dog this season, and that settled it. Ryan’s line was that they like the coach, so let’s roll.
